Matthew Continetti is right: the idea that "they will get something done on health care" that is being floated around by pundits of various stripes is playing into a myth. There is nothing in stone saying that they will get anything done and when you look at the magnitude of the hurdles and the various competing and often glaring contradictions in different constituencies, etc., it should be glaringly evident that it will be darn difficult to pass even a severely watered down bill that will make all parties in the House happy{1}, likewise in the Senate. Then said divergent congressional bills would have to be reconciled in a way to make all parties happy and pass both houses before the president could sign and seal the deal. In other words, A LOT to do and quite possibly impossible. Keep your chins up, keep calling congresspeople and senators, and keep fighting folks!!!

Note:

{1} I originally wrote this for another publishing medium in the days before the House voted on Pelosi's bill last Saturday night barely passing it 220-215. Other than the bit footnoted, I stand by the rest of what is noted above.

Al Gore sued by over 30,000 Scientists for Global Warming fraud

The sad thing is, most people are so bereft of the concept of logic and how to use it, so incapable of using their intellectual faculties to discern that they often buy what anyone with a degree on something tells them. I have no degrees in climatology, just a lot of horse sense and I have been saying for years that this is a bunch of cowcrap. For crying out loud, Greenland is a sheet of ice now and 1000 years ago, Eric the Red or Leif Ericcson (cannot offhand recall which) named it "Greenland" because it was green then.

The earth was warmer during the so-called "Dark Ages" than it was in the twentieth century to say nothing of the twenty-first century. Global temperatures between 1940 and 1980 cooled, in the late 1970's many "experts" were saying it would be "another ice age." Then the earth warmed from 1980 to approximately 2000 and they sceamed "global warming oh God the seas will rise." Now things are cooling again and have been since approximately 1999-2000 and they are trying to equivocate on the temperature in order to claim an "emergency" no matter which direction the temperatures go in direct violation of the law of non-contradiction.

On Hannah Giles, ACORN, and the Fourth Amendment:
(A Dialogue)

This material was written in another publishing medium about five minutes ago. The positional adversary's words will be in dark green font.

So let me get this...everyone in here hates Acorn because they broke the law, but yet are supportive of Hannah even thought she too broke the law?

The colonists also "broke the law" when they threw tea into Boston Harbor. It was once "against the law" for someone to help black slaves become free because they were "property" of other people. Heck, into the twentieth century it was once "against the law" for a black person to drink from a "white drinking fountain." Something is not always moral or ethical simply because it is legal. Law should constitute justice but it is often perverted and used as a pre-text for inflicting evils upon others.

ACORN as an entity that operated in secrecy and yet received tax-payer money was just such a situation of the immoral and unethical who now try to hide behind the thin veneer of "the law." Hannah busted them and God bless her for it. As far as I am concerned, she deserves the Pulitzer Prize in journalism for this and James deserves "documentary filmmaker of the year."{1}

Acorn's lawsuit is based on the 4th Amendment of the US Constitution, so I feel like that is a fairly just claim since I support the US Constitution

Well if you support the Constitution, how about making even an elementary attempt at properly applying it rather than inventing things out of whole cloth as typical "evolving constitution" style nonsense sorts are prone to do. The Fourth Amendment was promulgated as a safeguard of the rights of individuals to provide reasonable privacy from intrusion by the government. Giles and O'Keefe are private citizens and not the government so this suit should be thrown out as the joke that it is. The key word is "should."

I also do not know how she took on this big corrupt firm on her own, CNN published articles about Acorn employees being tried nearly a year before Hannah's "breaking" story.

For election fraud sure. The corruption of ACORN goes far beyond that though. And the msm had stories on ACORN that they spiked during the 2008 election season because they did not want to make the "ObaMessiah" look bad. Furthermore, the depth of ACORN's rotted nature was not touched on by any media source prior to Hannah's expose.

Excerpts From Literature/Writings:

[Prefatory Note: For some insights into why I chose the particular material below for posting under this heading when it technically does not belong here, please see this previous posting for details as well as my thoughts on the material below. -ISM]

At last I was granted permission to come to Washington and bring my friend Yellow Bull and our interpreter with me. I am glad I came. I have shaken hands with a good many friends, but there are some things I want to know which no one seems able to explain. I cannot understand how the Government sends a man out to fight us, as it did General Miles, and then breaks his word. Such a government has something wrong about it. I cannot understand why so many chiefs are allowed to talk so many different ways, and promise so many different things. I have seen the Great Father Chief [President Hayes]; the Next Great Chief [Secretary of the Interior]; the Commissioner Chief; the Law Chief; and many other law chiefs [Congressmen] and they all say they are my friends, and that I shall have justice, but while all their mouths talk right I do not understand why nothing is done for my people. I have heard talk and talk but nothing is done. Good words do not last long unless they amount to something. Words do not pay for my dead people. They do not pay for my country now overrun by white men. They do not protect my father's grave. They do not pay for my horses and cattle. Good words do not give me back my children. Good words will not make good the promise of your war chief, General Miles. Good words will not give my people a home where they can live in peace and take care of themselves.

I am tired of talk that comes to nothing. It makes my heart sick when I remember all the good words and all the broken promises. There has been too much talking by men who had no right to talk. Too many misinterpretations have been made; too many misunderstandings have come up between the white men and the Indians. If the white man wants to live in peace with the Indian he can live in peace. There need be no trouble. Treat all men alike. Give them the same laws. Give them all an even chance to live and grow. All men were made by the same Great Spirit Chief. They are all brothers. The earth is the mother of all people, and all people should have equal rights upon it. You might as well expect all rivers to run backward as that any man who was born a free man should be contented penned up and denied liberty to go where he pleases. If you tie a horse to a stake, do you expect he will grow fat? If you pen an Indian up on a small spot of earth and compel him to stay there, he will not be contented nor will he grow and prosper. I have asked some of the Great White Chiefs where they get their authority to say to the Indian that he shall stay in one place, while he sees white men going where they please. They cannot tell me.

I only ask of the Government to be treated as all other men are treated. If I cannot go to my own home, let me have a home in a country where my people will not die so fast. I would like to go to Bitter Root Valley. There my people would be happy; where they are now they are dying. Three have died since I left my camp to come to Washington.

When I think of our condition, my heart is heavy. I see men of my own race treated as outlaws and driven from country to country, or shot down like animals.

I know that my race must change. We cannot hold our own with the white men as we are. We only ask an even chance to live as other men live. We ask to be recognized as men. We ask that the same law shall work alike on all men. If an Indian breaks the law, punish him by the law. If a white man breaks the law, punish him also.

Let me be a free man, free to travel, free to stop, free to work, free to trade where I choose, free to choose my own teachers, free to follow the religion of my fathers, free to talk, think and act for myself -- and I will obey every law or submit to the penalty.

Whenever the white man treats the Indian as they treat each other then we shall have no more wars. We shall be all alike -- brothers of one father and mother, with one sky above us and one country around us and one government for all. Then the Great Spirit Chief who rules above will smile upon this land and send rain to wash out the bloody spots made by brothers' hands upon the face of the earth. For this time the Indian race is waiting and praying. I hope no more groans of wounded men and women will ever go to the ear of the Great Spirit Chief above, and that all people may be one people.

Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekht has spoken for his people. [Chief Joseph: From a Speech Delivered in Washington DC (circa 1879)]
Miscellaneous Musings:

The category to which the next post of material is to be classified is one that is usually confined to selections strictly speaking that fit the title so given but as this is my blog, I can allow in special circumstances for some leeway and as this is my birthday today, I am going to allow even more leeway still. Technically, this does not fit the category of classification but I believe the speech to be quoted from here speaks to the heart of any person who is of goodwill who sees injustices being perpetrated.

Though I am a staunch advocate and defender of this great country of ours, I am at the same time aware of the line from America the Beautiful which goes "America, America, God mend thy every flaw." And one of the latter flaws was the way in which the nation treated the Indians they had conquered in wars. As a believer in fighting for what one believes in, I also believe that when battle ceases, an important part of ethics is keeping the words to which one promises themselves. And this area of keeping the promises one makes is one of the areas where America in its leaders insofar as the treatment of the Native American tribes did not live up to the ideals espoused in its founding.

In speaking on this issue I want to be clear that I am not speaking of those tribes which continued hostilities or otherwise sought to inflict damage on the settlers or people of various states or territories. No, I speak of tribes such as the Nez Perce and the warrior Chief Joseph who when the end of the road had come in their struggle against the United States surrendered in a most noble way and was made promises by this nation which its leaders did not keep. And bearing that failing in mind, the next post will contain excerpts from Chief Joseph in a speech he delivered two years after his surrender in Washington DC when he came to the capital to seek justice and recompense in areas to which he had been promised. The basic principles he outlines in that speech are timeless and applicable to people of all times and places; ergo it seems fitting to set them forth for our own contemplation which the next post to this humble weblog will endeavour to do.

I want to point y'all to it and ask why (if what she says is true) did I have to learn this from calling them and not from the news -ANY news program. Liberals Lay Off Obama

For those who wonder who could be claiming in lieu of the fact that President Obama has done NOTHING that he is "doing a great job" or has "done something", here is an example from The Daily Beast. Try to not be drinking anything when you read it though.

And yes folks, being "on your way" to doing something is now considered actually doing something by this crowd. The 10,000 point Dow level is considered significant to these same people who did not blink when the Dow under President Bush topped 14,000 in late 2007.

Furthermore, he is actually claiming the stimulus has been "slowing the nation's descent", and considering it an accomplishment that "a universal health care bill’s passage through Senate Committee." Celebrating a bill making it out of committee??? Boy these folks do not realize how they wear their desperation on their sleeves.

On Obama, Government Run Health Care, and "Waterloo":
(Musings of your humble servant at Rerum Novarum)

[Preface: This was originally drafted in late July, completed before the August congressional recess, and posted in a slightly different form to another publishing medium on September 1, 2009. -ISM]

There has been an analogy in the past month that has been growing rapidly to describe President Obama's health care proposal; namely, that the health care plan he and congress are attempting to shove through before the summer recess will be "Obama's Waterloo." To my knowledge, the first to specifically refer to the health care plan by this label was former Clinton Administration strategist Dick Morris in an article he wrote in June for his website which was published in a variety of outlets including The Hill and Human Events. I find it interesting that Morris' column was published a day before the historical event itself began.{1} Not long after that, we have Senator JimDeMint who presumably read Morris' column in June who last week had this to say about Obamacare:

“If we’re able to stop Obama on this it will be his Waterloo. It will break him.”

Before readers think this is just the Republicans playing politics here, they need to consider what the term Waterloo means so a little history lesson is in order here. Though the French Revolution of 1789 (comparable to the American Revolution of 1776 only in a facile way{2}) followed the usual pattern of chaos, mob rule, and execution of "dissenters", the Corsican General Napoleon in the midst of the Rein of Terror and general chaos defeated the armies of coalition nations opposing France twice: once in 1793 and again in 1798. He later took over France itself in a coup in 1799.

Napoleon amassed powers and got rid of distant French projects that took a toll on the military and the treasury -the struggles with the Haitian revolution{3} and the First Rule of African Warfare{4} prompting him to sell off Louisiana to the United States in 1803 being a prevalent one in American eyes.{4} He then had himself crowned as Emperor in 1804. During the first decade of the nineteenth century and in keeping with the First Rule of French Warfare{5}, Napoleon was able to conquer continental Europe and installed in various countries family members and friends to "rule" them who were answerable to him.{6} In three subsequent attempts by coalitions of nations to defeat France in war on land, Napoleon was victorious. He had by 1811 extended the French Empire throughout continental Europe and even into Norway.

While it is true that Napoleon had had some setbacks in expanding power to the extent he wanted to{7} it was the 1812 Russia campaign which was a turning point in Napoleon's successes since his army was subjected to a Russian approach known as a "scorched earth" retreat which destroyed all the available food sources for the invading French forces. The end result was Napoleon was victorious on the rare occasions when he engaged the Russians but failed to get Czar Nicholas I to abdicate when he captured Moscow. Upon leaving his troops to go back to Paris, there were a variety of factors that broke down his remaining forces including starvation, demoralization, loss of supply horses and supplies, and a breakdown of his troop discipline. Throw in attacks from the Russians and loss of a few battles upon retreating{8} and the tide clearly had turned for Napoleon.

Napoleon was not finished yet however. When he returned to Paris, he had about one tenth of the number of troops he had when he had set off for Moscow. Various nations in seeing the vulnerability seized on his military's weakened condition to launch a sixth united offensive against him. But Napoleon was still able to inflict a series of defeats against his foes until a vastly superior force beat him at Leipzig in October of 1813 -one of the worst defeats of his career. He rebounded with a barrage of victories in the Six Days Campaign despite being outnumbered by opposing forces about 5:1 but was ultimately unable to stop the multi-national opposition forces from capturing Paris. Not long after, unable to count on his generals for support, Napoleon abdicated.

But Napoleon was not done yet and though exiled to Elba in 1814, he would escape the following year and regain his throne. However, this time with an army of 200,000 he decided to go on the offense against his foes and on June 18, 1815 met the British Arthur Wellesley, 1st Duke of Wellington and the Prussian Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher at Wellington. Here is how Wikipedia explained the event:

Napoleon's forces fought the allies, led by Wellington and Gebhard Leberecht von Blücher, at the Battle of Waterloo on 18 June 1815. Wellington's army withstood repeated attacks by the French and drove them from the field while the Prussians arrived in force and broke through Napoleon's right flank. The French army left the battlefield in disorder, which allowed Coalition forces to enter France and restore Louis XVIII to the French throne. Off the port of Rochefort, Charente -Maritime, after consideration of an escape to the United States, Napoleon formally demanded political asylum from the British Captain Frederick Maitland on HMS Bellerophon on 15 July 1815.

Historically, Waterloo was the final breaking point of Napoleon: a massive defeat that ended not only his rule of France but also his threat to again have power. He was exiled to St. Helena not long afterward and died there six years later.

How does this have relevance to the current situation??? Well, for one thing like Napoleon the president has sought to fight on a lot of fronts ala what happened with the invasion of Russia and this makes him vulnerable to a sustained assault on any major issue if conservatives and Republicans can stop jumping on every little red-herring side issue and focus fully on an issue like health care.{9} Second, the president is resorting to courting the radicals of his party's fringe and abandoning the moderate and more conservative Democrats who will have to face stiff challenges in next year's election which is the military equivalent of going up against opposition seriously outnumbered. Third, it is evident that there is chaos in the House and Senate in putting together and a public approval of the health-care plan at less than 50% and falling as I write this which mirrors the confusion Napoleon's troops had at Waterloo.

Now obviously all analogies fall short to some extent but when understood in the context of a rousing defeat so bad that the party suffering it never recovers from, the health care issue indeed could be the Waterloo of this president. Your host for one certainly interested in doing what he can to facilitate that occurrence because what is involved here is such an egregious violation of our God-given fundamental rights but enough on this matter for now. The real fight will take place when congress is in their districts for summer recess, at the town halls, and when they return from recess so recognizing the key physiological principle of intensity and duration{10} requires us to rest on this matter now and prepare to go at it full force for the fall battle ahead both on this matter and also on crap and tax cap and trade.

Notes:

{1} June 18, 1815.

{2} The American Revolution is the only revolution in history that resulted in a government that provided its citizens with more freedom instead of less. The French Revolution was standard for revolutions in that it resulted in creating anarchy which was followed by dictatorship.

{3} The Haitian Revolution started in 1791 during the French Revolution and continued until 1804.

{4} There were financial as well as tactical reasons for this on the part of Napoleon. On the American front though, it represented a doubling of territory. It also represented President Thomas Jefferson contradicting his previous "strict constructionist" reading -an unworkable method of approaching the Constitution that I have written on before and which I might add was not a view of the Constitution that was shared by most of the Founders including George Washington, Alexander Hamilton, Gouverneur Morris, John Adams, and Benjamin Franklin to name several notable figures. (As well as the James Madison of the pre-1790 and post-1815 period.) Therefore, in the interest of being consistent I view Ron Paul and his supporters and anyone else who think that if it is not explicitly in the Constitution something cannot be done should in the interest of being consistent campaign to return those territories to the French and declare the Louisiana Purchase as unconstitutional. Otherwise, there is no reason to take them seriously on their babblings about what is and is not supposedly "constitutional."

{4} First Rule of African Warfare: We can always beat the French. [LINK]

{5} First Rule of French Warfare: France's armies are victorious only when not led by a Frenchman. [LINK]

{6} One might even say these people represented Napoleon's "Czars" if they really want to parallel in the nations of nineteenth century Europe what President Obama has done with various parts of the American government and economy with his appointed "czars" who only answer to him.

{7} Including a tactical defeat at the Battle of Asbern-Essling in 1809 which was quickly avenged at the Battle of Wagram.

{8} Including the Battle of Krasnoi and the disaster that was the Battle of Berezina.

{9} Or as I noted in a post election analysis thread back in December when outlining how we can most efficaciously combat the majority party in the two years to come and beyond:

With an incoming Democratic president and a Democratic majority in both houses of the Congress, a lot of issues are going to be pushed -many of them ones that we who did not vote for President Obama and the Democrats do not agree with. The problem is, if we run all over the map and oppose simply to be opposing, that will achieve nothing constructive. And furthermore, it is naive to think that everything they attempt to do we will be able to stop so that also needs to be taken into account. Basically, we need to decide in how we go about this first of all, what we will fight tooth and nail for: what are the issues which we absolutely must stand up and hold the line on without an iota of compromise. From there, the rest can be categorized into basically (i) things we want to try and force the Democrats on record supporting so we can make election issues on them in 2010, (ii) things of a less significant nature we actually think can be accomplished despite the Democrats having control of the government, (iii) things we need to put out there for the future which we know will not succeed in the soon-to-be present but nonetheless are points of reference for the future of a positive nature. In other words, we need to strategerize here and not play the same bullshit of those who opposed the outgoing Bush administration on everything and anything simply because they hated President Bush, thought he was Hitler, or whatever. [Excerpt from Rerum Novarum (circa December 11, 2008)]

{10} [Y]our host does not go all out with intense political focus all the time [because] it is physiologically not possible to operate at high intensity for duration; ergo the best way to approach geopolitical stuff is with short bursts of intensity in brief periods with a degree of infrequency. Other than that, focusing elsewhere or addressing these issues with greater frequency but much less duration is the approach to be taken. Notice I am not saying do nothing, only that it is imperative to avoid burnout physiologically to recognize that intensity and duration are two sides of the same coin and cannot be realized at one and the same time. [Excerpt from Rerum Novarum (circa November 7, 2006)]

Points to Ponder:

[T]hose who have comments boxes are capable of manipulating the content there to suit their own agenda including banning people who raise strong enough arguments against the "prevailing orthodoxy" at a given weblog. You would be surprised at how often those who laud their "willingness to interact with others" will put censors on their comments boxes that would make the monitors at Pravda in the days of the old Soviet Union blush and as we do not believe in unnecessary censorship, that means we would inexorably leave out there potentially a variety of assertions that our lack of time to respond to would give the unintended perception of being "unanswerable" by us. Those are the main reasons for our refusal to use comments boxes in a nutshell. [Excerpt from Rerum Novarum (circa December 1, 2008)]
Firestorm threatens to engulf Blanche Lincoln (Politico)

Senator Blanche Lincoln whatever else one wants to say about her was the only Democrat on Senator Max Baucus' Senate Finance Committee to vote for Senator Jim Bunning's amendment which would have prevented the attempt to jam Baucus' proposals through without being seen or even read. Those of you who want to call and scream at the Democrats on that committee for being a bunch of unethical f##king cowards who preach "transparency" yet do the exact opposite (in classic 1984 fashion I might add), kindly spare Ms. Lincoln from your wrath. She (unlike the other twelve Democrats on that committee) did the right thing ethically and in principle and for this she deserves to be commended.
On Recent Funerals and Suspending My "No More Funerals" Stance of Recent Years:

I attended another funeral yesterday eleven days ago -my twenty-first in the last nine and a half years.{1} This was despite the fact that I decided to take a "no more funerals" approach to things after attending my Aunt Cecilia's funeral in the second part of 2006. At that point, I had attended twenty funerals in six and a half years and simply could not deal with it anymore. And that was not even all the family, friends, etc. who died in that span of time. But I had to suspend my stand for Jerry Dykstra, a good friend of my fathers and whose eldest son I played soccer with for six of the eight years I played in years past.{2}

I knew Jerry for nearly thirty years and was able to see him in the final weeks when he was getting to the point to where his cancer was becoming unbearable. But he always had a smile on his face, always was of good cheer, and continued to drink two rusty nails a night until recent months.{3} He was a good man and will be missed -most of all by his family of course and I told his sons if they wanted to talk about it to feel free to give me a call. No sooner did I get back than I heard from my mother that my Uncle Don passed away earlier that same day so if his funeral is in the Seattle area,{4} I will again suspend my "no more funerals" policy and go to that one.

I have known Uncle Don{5} literally all my life. I am sure he held me in his arms at least once when I was still in diapers: I note that to give an idea of how far back this connection goes. He was also a good and decent man. I had not seen either Uncle Don or his wife my Aunt Sheila{6} in probably three or four years -I think the last time was at their son Paul's wedding in 2004. But unlike in the case of Jerry of whom we knew was going to have less than a year,{7} Don's death came completely out of the blue unexpected. Jerry died three months shy of his seventy-first birthday, Don two months shy of his sixty-first birthday.

Prayers for both of them would be most appreciated.

Eternal rest grant unto their souls oh Lord and let thy Perpetual Light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. May the souls of Jerry Dykstra and Don Hellstrom along with the souls of all the faithfully departed, through the Mercy of God rest in peace. Amen.

Notes:

{1} In that span of time, I lost thirty-five persons either close family, relatives, close friends, etc.

{2} I covered the subjects of funerals in general around that time and also on the subject of Aunt Ceil in another thread. Here they are for those who are interested:

On Prayer Requests (circa October 3, 2006)

More on Cecilia Flynn (circa October 5, 2006)

{3} Jerry and my father used to drink rusty nails together and after my father died, Jerry would drink two a night: one for him and one for my dad. That was his story anyway and he stuck to it until for health reasons he could not.

{4} It is most likely going to be in Wenatchee, Washington though.

[Update: It was held in East Wenatchee and I did not attend due to the distance. -ISM]

{5} Basically an honourific title: Don was married to Sheila my dad's adopted sister. (It was her mom Jenny whose death in March of 2000 started this long chain of passings but I digress.)

{6} I am sure my dad figured this out years back but when I was a teenager, I had a crush on my Aunt Sheila.

On ACORN and Corruption:
(Musings of your humble servant at Rerum Novarum)

I originally was going to post this as a minor posting back around September tenth but was not able to get around to it until now and since the original draft, a lot has developed on this subject so I want to go over it all here. Let us start with the original material of this posting which was to be led off with this link:

Exposed! ACORN Gets Its Nuts Cracked: Teenage Prostitutes, Money Laundering and Tax Fraud (Doug Giles)

Originally I was going to say that the mainstream media would not cover this of course any more than they covered the 11 ACORN persons arrested for voter registration fraud in Florida earlier in the month{1} (one of whom registered "Paul Newman" to vote incidentally enough) or the fact that ACORN is under investigation in twelve states for voter fraud. But bear this in mind: if ACORN was in any way connected with a prominent Republican, the msm would be all over this. Once again though, President Obama's connections with this organization from his community organizing days will likely be ignored.

To get the gist of the story, read the link above because what Hannah Giles (posing as a prostitute) and James O'Keefe (a film maker posing as a pimp) did in the Baltimore branch of ACORN was duplicated in a variety of other ACORN offices. ACORN fired the two employees involved in the sting in Baltimore and also two more who were involved in a similar sting in the ACORN Washington DC office. You can read more on the DC matter here.

Now the rest of the media other than Fox they were as silent as a whore in church initially. But then there was a sting in Brooklyn, New York upon which employees from ACORN there were fired and the Brooklyn DA will pursue investigating ACORN perhaps even under RICO statutes. Then we have the Census Bureau stripping ACORN of participation in the 2010 census, another video emerging out of San Diego, California and another one in San Bernadino where a woman is on camera talking about killing her husband along with the usual prostitution stuff.

ACORN kept trying to play it down and has threatened to go after the film makers but they also fired all their employees involved in the various offices where Giles and O'Keefe caught them on camera giving advice on various ways of breaking the law from advice on opening a house of prostitution to tax evasion to smuggling underage illegal immigrants from El Salvador to work in the house of prostitution, etc. Yet despite all of this (and this is not all there is), ACORN has the aucadity to accuse Giles and O'Keefe of immoral conduct when all they did was trap ACORN's employees on camera endorsing some of the worst kind of filth imaginable!!!

Meanwhile, the Senate voted 83-7 to defund ACORN on September 15th with the House following suit on Thursday with a 345-78 vote.{2} All of this happened not because of the mainstream media but instead in spite of them because other than Fox News, they were all very late to this story and it is not as if they were ignorant of ACORN being a corrupt organization.

There is a reason why your host has for years sought as much as possible to get news from sources other than the mainstream media which is frankly little different (at all) than a state-run media. If anything has made this irreversibly clear, it is the media's woeful performance in the past week in covering stories from the Van Jones resignation to the 912 march to the ACORN scandals: all of which put the Obama administration in bad light. And this means the depths of disgrace to which the mainstream media sunk last year are depths to which they remain.

Hi-Ho, the Derry-O

This paragraph is like Mastercard:

[Michelle Obama] spoke of her own culinary efforts: "There are times when putting together a healthy meal is harder than you might imagine." Particularly when it involves a soundstage, an interpreter for the deaf, three TV satellite trucks and the closing of part of downtown
Washington.

I seriously do not know what more could I add to that. But I am sure my Accord is the real "carbon footprint maker" not the caravan of vehicles that Michelle Obama used to go shopping right???
Organizing Against World Net Daily

The beauty of being a conspiracy theorist is you do not have to subject your ideas to things like logic, reason, non-contradiction, or any other factors that people who take thinking seriously would do. To the extent that World Net Daily entertains this kind of crap, they do the opposition to President Obama, Speaker Pelosi, and their radical ilk a grave disservice.

What's Happening to Women's Happiness?

While an interesting article, this is not that difficult to explain in my mind. Basically, women were deceived into thinking they could "have it all" by various feminist sorts and the fact is, that is and always has been a myth. More could be noted and I may very well expand on this at length at some point in the future. However, at the moment that is all I have time to say on this matter except of course that my posting of an article from the "Huff and Puff Post" does not constitute any sort of general endorsement of them as a source.
Did He Lie?

As usual, Charles "in Charge" Krauthammer puts forth a fine article -this one examining the Obama claims from his joint session speech on September 9th.
Cap and Trade Will Cost $1,761 Per Family: US Treasury Dept

Gee, those who were claiming that it it would only cost "pennies a day" and were blasting the Heritage Foundation's $3,000 per family estimate as "grossly excessive" should apologize for their lies and shut their pie holes. They have no credibility whatsoever on this issue anymore. Considering how cap and trade barely made it through the House back in June, the subsequent revelation of the EPA suppressing a critical review by one of their analyists coupled with the fact that this cap and trade revelation from the Treasury Department was known to the Obama administration back in March: the combination of these two developments should suffice to kill crap and tax cap and trade in the Senate.

New Government Policy Imposes Strict Standards on Garage Sales Nationwide

I will have to tell my mother the next time she does one of her big garage sales that she needs to police what she sells lest she be fined for selling any used toys from friends of hers that are on some government book list of things you are "not allowed to sell" now. Gee, how would any of us ever be able to live and avoid "running with scissors" if not for the "benevolent hand" of Leviathan watching over us all???
What Happened to the Anti-War Movement? (Byron York)

Whatever one might say about Cindy Sheehan, she is at least consistent. For that reason, though I disagree with her on her views, I do respect that she has shown principle in her anti-war stance unlike so many others who were louder than Fourth of July fireworks when President George W. Bush was in office but who are now as silent as a whore in church with President Barack H. Obama in the White House.

Flashback 1991: Gephardt Called Bush's Speech to Students 'Paid Political Advertising'

I am sure that while many Republicans and Independents (not to mention some Democrats) were uncomfortable with the "study plans" released for students prior to President Obama's speech today, I doubt any of them would call for an investigation of the White House and spending public money on this matter. The same was not the case with the Democrats in Congress during the administration of President George H. W. Bush. Kudos to Noel Sheppard at News Busters for this scoop and pointing out yet another in a long list of hypocritical double standards employed by Democrats in Congress.

Cheney: Obama Team Should Be Debriefing CIA Interrogators, Not Investigating Them

It should not take even the assistant of the assistant of a rocket scientist to realize what actions such as these do. For one thing, they lower the morale of people who work at the CIA and are involved in national security. Secondly, if lawyers who give legal opinions which lead to or influence policy have to be concerned about future administrations even talking about (let alone actually) looking at investigating them for supposed "criminal behaviour"{1}, then this will inexorably lead to a weakening of national security. How could it otherwise since -the absolute idiocy if these assertions aside for a moment{2}- any motivations for taking tough measures against non-Geneva following enemy combatants will have to be weighed against the possibility of the person's views being considered "criminal."

This would furthermore (if the current crowd's methodology is observed and presumed to be the future norm in this area) not to be not be done an objective manifestation of the evidences.{3} Instead on the mere subjective intentions{4} of any given polemicist who finds himself in power later on and wants to extract political revenge against positional adversaries. The latter is what they do in communist/socialist/totalitarianist nations, it should not be what we see in a republic such as ours.

Notes:

{1} I say "supposed" because whatever one thinks about the manner in which detainees were treated, it borders on banana republic behaviour for one administration to be playing the "our predecessors were criminals" schtick. Plus, the idea that we were engaging in "torture" is so laughable as to be absurd but then again, when you have people refusing to define their terms, this is the sort of irrational drivel you get: people mindlessly parroting words and slogans as if this suffices to make their argument.

Van Jones Resigns

I wish I had not lost the text of a private chat a good friend with whom I was discussing late last week the next person who would be gone from President Obama's cabinet. I said it would be Van Jones, they said it would be Leon Panetta. Nonetheless, they know who they are and I simply want to note this for the record and say five words on the resignation of self-avowed communist and 9/11 "truther" Van Jones; namely: good riddance to bad rubbish!!!

George W. Bush-by-Proxy Syndrome

It is interesting to think of the apparently "leaderless GOP" possibly being a tactic the GOP is using to combat Obama's and Rahm Emmanuel's Alinsky approach{1} to politics by denying them a figure to freeze and polarize as the textbook dictates.{2} If they have planned it this way than it is a clever ploy but I am suspecting it is more dumb luck than anything{3} unless and until the contrary is reasonably demonstrated to me.

Its All a Death Panel! (Dick Morris and Eileen McGann)

Whatever criticisms may be legitimately launched at how Sarah Palin explained this issue (read: with the "death panel" comments), the bottom line is, technically she was right. Former Clinton adviser Dick Morris along with Eileen McGann explains in this article precisely that. ‘Exercising My Rights’: Man Explains Why He Carried Rifle Near Obama Event (Breitbart)

Anyone who denies that the msm is biased, consider what would have happened if this man had been white: it would have been front page news. Furthermore, the news reported that the man was an Obama supporter when he was not. Gee, didja assume that he HAD to be an Obama supporter 'cause...oh I do not know he was BLACK??? Who are the racists now CNN???
I am finally scared of a White House administration (Nat Hentoff)

Nat Hentoff is someone whose work I have enjoyed over the years. I disagree with him oftentimes but he is a liberal with integrity. So when Hentoff writes "I was not intimidated during J. Edgar Hoover's FBI hunt for reporters like me who criticized him. I railed against the Bush-Cheney war on the Bill of Rights without blinking. But now I am finally scared of a White House administration", to me that is newsworthy!!!

Should Conspiracy Theories Be Indulged? (Laurance Caromba)

For those who may wonder why I have virtually never said a thing or cared a whit about what Andrew Sullivan says about anything, here is a good reason why: he is an unethical hypocrite.

In the example outlined by Mr. Caromba, Sullivan claims that President Barack Obama does not have the very right to privacy on releasing certain kinds of sensitive information that in 1998 he claimed Clinton had -presumably to prop up his idiotic statements about Trig Palin and demanding the latter's birth certificate. First of all, the two are not apples and apples -as much of a non-winning issue as I view the Obama birth certificate issue to be, it still stands to note that he is an elected official and Trig last time I checked was not. But this is not the first time he has done this.

For example, Sullivan started claiming around 2004-2006 things about the Iraq war that were different from stuff he said in 2002-2004.{1} Thankfully, someone fact checked him using the internet archive. The ottom line: Sullivan is an unethical hypocrite who engages in historical revisionism. For those reasons, he is not worth the time of day in my humble opinion on any subject whatsoever.

Note:

{1} He was an unabashed supporter of the war going so far as to bully those who were not. (This is something your host who supported the use of the military option in Iraq never condoned.) That was his position until President Bush spoke of strengthening via possible constitutional amendment the Defense of Marriage Act. That event set Sullivan -who puts gay issues over and above anything else- dead set against all things George W. Bush overnight: proof that he is not a principled man at all but an unethical and ideological shill.

Ultra Briefly on President Obama's Latest Town Hall on Health Care "Reform":

To quote my own words from about an hour ago in another publishing medium:

[I] will now summarize Obama's town hall...so you do not have to watch it: (1) Its Bush's fault (2) We will expand coverage and not cut benefits while cutting costs basically suspending the laws of economics and logic: yes we can!!! (3) You will not lose your doctor and this is a good plan but do not expect me or congress to want it for ourselves (4) Your taxes will not go up, see point 2...

There, I just saved you an hour of your life and at least ten IQ points!!!

The following excerpt highlights the substance of the column in a nutshell:

Why does President Obama want to implement all at once radical changes in American foreign policy, environmental policy, education, health care and the tax code? The answer is easy: If he does not achieve these initiatives soon, he never will.

Precisely.

Points to Ponder:
(From one of my early intellectual mentors)

"You must understand that it is not only possible, but highly desirable, to do several things simultaneously; thus, it happened that I was operating an international airline, importing thousands of live wild animals, producing films for television and building exercise machines all at the same time. In my opinion, many of our current problems are direct results of specialization; which is why the scientific community has now degenerated to the point of being a sick joke.

When I first became seriously interested in the subject of exercise physiology, more than sixty years ago, I was unable to find anything of any slightest value that had ever been published in the scientific literature; that being the case, I believe, primarily as a result of two factors: ONE, very few scientists had any slightest interest in exercise, and, TWO, it was then impossible to determine the results of exercise for the simple reason that the required tools for any such measurements did not exist. REMEMBER: it is impossible to evaluate, or even understand, anything that you cannot measure." [Arthur Jones (circa 1997)]
Cornyn accuses White House of compiling 'enemies list'

Longtime readers of this weblog know that my assessment of President George W. Bush was a mixed one. I am not going to revisit the layers of agreement/disagreement I had with him and various administration policies and/or individuals. I will however say that if President George W. Bush had tried to do with ideological or policy foes what President Barack H. Obama has sought to do with this "send emails of people who disagree with us to the White House" and supplied an address to do so, I would have resolutely stood in opposition to him on that matter.{1} Furthermore, anyone who whined and bitched about the Bush Administration and real or perceived "loss of freedoms"{2} who either stands by silently or in any way approves of the Obama administration acting this way is (and I will not mince words) a hypocritical piece of shit.

Again, a situation or principle is in its truth or falsity right or wrong period. This assessment is not okay or defensible when "your guys" do it and not okay or to be condemned when "others" do it. And however many pundits, agenda provocateurs, or apologists of various and sundry issues{3} may violate the law of non-contradiction to their own deserved discredit, your humble servant at Rerum Novarum does not do such things at any time and indeed no person of ethics and principle would do such things.

Notes:

{1} To use one subject that comes to mind, consider for those who know very well of my solid and unshakeable support for the military interventions in Afghanistan and Iraq. If the White House had dared to ask me or anyone else to send emails or materials I knew of concerning people who wrote or spoke against the wars, I would not only not have done so but I would have written to them and denounced such things. I hope readers of this weblog who are ideologically not aligned with me would have the ethics to do likewise.

{2} I say "real or perceived" because this area is not as clean cut as many people may have presumed.

{3} Or members of congress, presidents, etc.
With the confirmation today of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court by a vote of 68-31, I decided to create a tag for the posts on this subject because (i) the principles I outlined in my opposition to this nominee are and remain valid in perpetuity and (ii) I will refer back to them in subsequent court nominees by President Obama.

It is my hope that the Sotomayor confirmation be for Obama what the Battle of the Coral Sea was for the Japanese (read: tactical victory but strategic loss before a much larger planned engagement at Midway). And may government health care be his Battle of Midway (read: a decisive American victory that turned the tide of the war in the Pacific).
Weblog Threads on the Atomic Bomb Subject and Various Factors Involved in Objectively Assessing the Moral and Ethical Ramifications Thereof:
(A Rerum Novarum Recapitulation Thread)

I have at different points since 2005 issued recapitulation threads on these issues but this one will differ from those in one important way. For one thing, they were issued to summarize the material I had written up to that point with the idea of carrying it further. In those situations it could have been because I intended to pick up the thread from that point and continue it. In that context, the recapitulation threads served to remind readers of what had been covered already so they could put what was written from that point forward into the context of what was previously written. This recapitulation thread is not written with that context or intention in mind.

Essentially, this is written as all I plan to say on the matter this year with one caveat: the material from 2008 in the dialogue with "Blackadder" achieved what I wanted to see achieved in previous years though it was not until 2007 that I decided to try and set a frame work up for achieving that endeavour when previous situations with former friends fizzled so badly. To say I lost a lot of respect for most of those who call themselves "apologists" in the aftermath of those circumstances is not an exaggeration but I do not want to get offtrack now on that factor -if suffices to say that "Blackadder" to some measure restored in my mind an echo of hope that others may seek to approach these matters soberly, rationally, and civilly. If our interaction threads from 2008 assist others in that endeavour on this or any other subject, then the extra time taken on that process will have been worth it.

I know there is a lot to review in the scroll below so to facilitate an easier review for interested parties I would recommend that if nothing else at this time is culled for current reading from those lists I would recommend that the threads from July 22, 2007 -and the three threads it references from the list below, August 10, 2008 joint declaration of dialogual principles, and the August 14, 2008, and August 23, 2008 threads be read. For they encapsulate (i) the publicly outlined challenge I made on this in the summer of 2007, (ii) a joint statement of principles by myself and the person whose work I interacted with in 2008, and (iii) the two interaction threads. The counter-threads of "Blackadder" are linked to the beginning of my responses to him and I encourage readers to not only review his threads but to review them before reading my responses to them.

Now without further ado, here is a recapitulation thread of all postings I can think of culled from past such threads and added to this year with the stuff from 2008 and some of the threads from 2007 which will be listed by year (starting with the oldest threads). This posting will stand in perpetuity as all I intend to say on this subject in 2009 and perhaps in the years to follow.

All things to the contrary notwithstanding.

Debunking Federal Reserve Conspiracy Theories

Having written a bit over the years on the problems with conspiracies and that mindset{1}, the above issue deals with that mentality and certain myths surrounding the oft-misunderstood Federal Reserve System.

Note:

{1} Here is the most recent posting on these matters:

On the Problem With Conservatives Dabbling in So-Called "Conspiracy Theories" (circa March 8, 2009)
Miscellaneous Musings on Divisions Political and Otherwise:

[Prefatory Note: This was originally put together and published in another medium on June 15, 2009. -ISM]

In recent months, my observations of many people who are opposed in various and sundry ways to the Democratic party found me reflecting on a quote that I want to share at this time. It pertains to the issue of religion in the public square and the approach taken by not a few people who though they mean well often do more harm than good. To wit:

"There is no position on which people are so immovable as their religious beliefs. There is no more powerful ally one can claim in a debate than Jesus, God, or Allah, or whatever one calls the supreme being. But like any powerful weapon, the use of God's name on one's behalf should be used sparingly. The religious factions that are growing throughout our land are not using their religious clout with wisdom. They are trying to force government leaders into following their position 100 percent. If you disagree with these religious groups on a particular moral issue, they complain, they threaten you with a loss of money or votes or both. I'm frankly sick and tired of the political preachers across this country telling me as a citizen that if I want to be a moral person, I must believe in A,B,C, and D. Just who do they think they are? And from where do they presume to claim the right to dictate their moral beliefs to me? And I am even more angry as a legislator who must endure the threats of every religious group who thinks it has some God-granted right to control my vote on every roll call in the Senate. I am warning them today: I will fight them every step of the way if they try to dictate their moral convictions to all Americans in the name of conservatism." [Senator Barry M. Goldwater: From the Congressional Record (circa September 16, 1981)]

I have found that this quote resonates with me a lot more now than it did when I was younger. It is not an issue of principles of course that I refer to of course but the manner in how they are gone about more than anything. Maybe part of it is the longer one is around, the more they realize that to a certain extent the more things change the more they stay the same. For one thing, no one ever claims that they are living in "particularly good times" -indeed most of those people who make statements about their times as being particularly dire do so without knowledge of history or how often this pattern repeats itself. The biblical phrase "nothing under the sun is new" is quite accurate indeed as this quote could have been written today as could this one which was directed by Senator Goldwater at Jerry Falwell circa 1982:

"Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they're sure trying to do so, it's going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can't and won't compromise. I know, I've tried to deal with them."

I am wondering if the opportunity of the next two election cycles to derail the Obama Express will not be squandered. For almost every issue you can find has a general consensus and also those whose approach to the matter is extremely narrow or otherwise extreme. And oftentimes you will find the latter people basically saying that only their interpretation of the issue is viable, correct, moral, etc. and this ushers in needless conflict which leads to divisions that results in political impotence.

We all have issues we are particularly passionate about but the differences of view on certain particulars of various issues are a reality and one that is not going to go away. If there is not a conscious recognition that politically one may not be able to get everything they want, then the Republicans will continue for sometime to get nowhere politically. I have noted before the irony of those who wave the banner of Reagan who really do not know what The Gipper stood for and did before and do not want to to into that again at the present time though those who buy into many of those myths would do well to consider what is written there because the underlying principle involved in that note remains; namely this:

Do we want to make effective and real progress politically or will continuing factionalism render us politically impotent???

Jesus once said that "a house divided against itself cannot stand" and Sun Tzu counseled his generals to divide enemy armies by sowing discord and creating various dissensions for a reason: it weakens the effectiveness of a cause. It matters not where or what the divisions are and the Democrats are seriously divided now. The haste with which they have sought to push issues that many of their voters do not want and the blatant hypocrisy and double standards they have manifested (not to mention being bitten by the "corruption bug") have got even many of their staunchest supporters confused or angry at them.

The political prospects for the next two election cycles are lining up to be favourable for an opposition movement but I will say right now it will fail as long as all of this factionalism garbage continues. The focus needs to be on broader issues where a consensus already exists and needs to be strengthened, not ancillary distraction issues which needlessly polarize and thus are fodder for political impotence.

Since they had that whole White House "beer summit" thing, I will share at this time a stanza poem I wrote last November, Without further ado...

May the memory of your self always strike a chord in others
May they look upon you fondly as they would their favourite brothers
Even if those lads happen to be sons of different mothers
These things can happen sometimes.

Let your memory be one of cheerfulness, be not a bore
That your friends may in memory raise an Irish toast to days of yore
May you make it to heaven thirty minutes before
The devil knows you are dead. [Written on 11/09/08]

Points to Ponder:
(On Humility and Writing Critiques of People)

[H]umility. You either have it or you don't and you won't find it if you don't have it, unless you have been knocked flat and see why you deserved that. Part of learning how to critique somebody is learning how to accept criticism and understanding the difference between a personal attack and a critique. In order to accept a legitimate critique you have to have humility and less ego which helps you gain perspective on what is a critique and what is an attack. Mariners, Pirates trade shortstops

Well, its not that simple really. The Seattle Mariners traded young shortstop Ronny Cedeno, Jeff Clement (AAA Tacoma player and major prospect), and three smaller prospects to the Pirates for former All Star shortstop Jack Wilson and right handed pitcher Ian Snell. This is a good trade that has the potential to become a great trade for the Mariners and the Pirates could do pretty well on it too particularly if Clement lives up to his potential. And yet again, I do not have any criticism of how Jack Zduriencik conducted himself. Hopefully he will pull off another trade in the next 24 hours for a big bat because the Mariners sure will need it if they are to be contenders this year in the playoffs or even (perhaps) to make the playoffs.
Please pray for the eternal repose of the souls of Thomas and Mark Girard and if you can help out their family in any way, please do what you can.

[Clarification: I intended to post this last year but for some reason it was not tended to. I am therefore posting it a year later because those who believe in the efficacy of prayers for the departed can still benefit these men in prayer. -ISM]

We present the majors leaguers with the least trade value

I found this thread to be of particular interest. A few points to note here:

15. Yuniesky Betancourt, Royals

Total left: $7 million through 2011 (includes $2 million team buyout and Mariners paying part of salary)

He can't hit, can't field, can't run, doesn't hustle or seem to care at times ... wait, you say the Royals actually just traded for this guy?

More like new Mariners GM Jack Zduriencik fleeced the Royals. He not only traded a guy with no plate discipline (someone who if he could would swing at other batter's pitches) but he did so for the Royals number one pitching prospect (read: someone who could be a starter for the M's in as soon as a year or two) and also another prospect who could turn out to be a solid bullpen left handed specialist. All of that for agreeing to buy part of Betancourt's salary out. Of course we had Yuni in our starting rotation because he was a project of former GM Bill Bavasi but Yuni that is Kansas City's problem now.

14. Kenji Johjima, Mariners

Total left: $18.64 million through 2011

Anybody want a 33-year-old catcher with a .299 on-base percentage and little power? Didn't think so. Congratulations, former Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi, you signed the first two guys on our list!

Meanwhile ESPN rubs salt in my wounds...

10. Dontrelle Willis, Nate Robertson, Jeremy Bonderman and Carlos Guillen, Tigers
Total left: $73.5 million (Guillen signed through 2011, others through 2010)

Congratulations, Dave Dombrowski, you've had so many bad signings recently that it's easier just to group them all together (and we considered including Miguel Cabrera, who will earn more than $100 million through 2015, but he's at least young enough to keep producing big numbers).

Note: Total payment increases $500,000 if Willis or Robertson win the Cy Young Award next season.

Sorry Kevin, I had to post this one because misery loves company. But just so you do not feel as if things are much worse out in your neck of the woods in this area, I remind you of this:

4. Carlos Silva, Mariners

Total left: $28.63 million through 2011 (includes $2 million team buyout)

On the bright side, Mariners fans, this contract was so stupefyingly awful, it led to the long-overdue firing that ended the incompetent reign of Bavasi. The deal was for $48 million and Silva has gone 5-18, 6.77 with the Mariners, is on the disabled list and quite likely to have thrown his last major league pitch.

So for others reading this, if you want to know why (i) I want to do to Bill Bavasi what Clubber Lang did to Rocky in their first fight and (ii) Kevin Tierney will probably watch Tigers games the next few days not far from a shotgun, this link explains it all.

Perry raises possibility of states' rights showdown with White House over healthcare

The essence of the article can be summed up in the first paragraph; namely:

Gov. Rick Perry, raising the specter of a showdown with the Obama administration, suggested Thursday that he would consider invoking states’ rights protections under the 10th Amendment to resist the president’s healthcare plan, which he said would be "disastrous" for Texas.

Maybe I need to consider moving to Galveston or something...
Why Obama Care is Sinking (Charles Krauthammer)

The first paragraph sums this whole article up nicely:

"What happened to Obamacare? Rhetoric met reality"

Or to quote from that great western philosopher Neil Young,"your Cadillac...has got a wheel in the ditch, and a wheel on the track!!!"
ACTION ALERT: Protest Chuck Schumer Support of Health Care Rout!

I will not be there for the event but I did design flyers for one of those involved in putting the event together. If you are out in New York City tomorrow evening, stop by and help out a bit if you can. The address is at the link above.
WATERLOO: Is Obama’s Presidency Imploding?

I plan to muse on this possibility in the coming days{1} by using historical examples and analogies to postulate this very possibility. In the meantime, the above thread is worth your time to peruse.

Note:

{1} I started drafting a thread on the matter five days ago and hope to have finishing touches on it by the end of the week.
Fingerprint Scanners Help Companies Track Workers

This link is about sixteen months old{1} and missed being posted at that time but since the issue at hand here is one that will quite possibly become more prevalent over time, it bears reflecting upon from time to time.

Speaking for myself, I view this as an unnecessary invasion of a person's privacy and one example of how technology can be used to enslave people in an Orwellian fashion rather than improving their lives.

Note:

{1} It was originally going to be published in March of 2008 then when I found it in a stack of unpublished threads earlier this year, I scheduled it for March 27, 2009. But it was overlooked at that time as well; ergo my reason for posting it at this time.
House healthcare talks break down in anger

God Bless the Blue Dogs. Too bad my waste of DNA Rep. Jay Inslee (and my senators Maria Cantvotewell and Patti Byrd-Murray) will be wasted phone calls. Oh well, time to continue calling the Blue Dogs to offer them support including those in this article.
Conyers Sees No Point in Members Reading 1,000-Page Health Care Bill--Unless They Have 2 Lawyers to Interpret It for Them

I am going to have to ask my amigo Kevin Tierney what they are drinking in the water out in Michigan. Observe:

"“I love these members, they get up and say, ‘Read the bill,’” said Conyers.

“What good is reading the bill if it’s a thousand pages and you don’t have two days and two lawyers to find out what it means after you read the bill?”

Then maybe, just MAYBE you should not write bills so long and convoluted that you guys can neither take the time to read them or know what they mean anyway. What morons!!!

Points to Ponder:

Politics is the art of the possible not the art of the perfect. [Excerpt from Rerum Novarum (circa June 16, 2009)]
Excerpts From Literature/Writings:

This is an abridgment from a web writing of mine circa nine years ago -roughly two years before the start of this humble weblog. The topic is conspiracy theories and their inherent problems. Without further ado...

[W]hile this author admittedly subscribes more to the conspiracy side of history than the accidental side (because it is human nature to conspire and little if anything happens by accident in world affairs), the extent to which some people will go with this theme is quite frightening. In essence it is trying to do with politics and world events what Protestant Fundamentalism seeks to do with science and theology...To people of this mode of thinking, any degree of mystery or the unexplained (or a realm of comprehension or information that they are unaware of or cannot explain) must be wrong if it does not fit into their narrowly-defined parameters of "correct" or "incorrect."...

To the economically undereducated, the concept of a complex capitalistic system simply must be the "Anti-Christ" or the "Beast" rather than a potentially good concept that is often perverted by evil men. Numerous other examples could be brought forward but the point being made here is evident. Simplistic thinking can be very dangerous and unfortunately most of its practitioners are unaware of the destructive range of this "weapon" if you will. [Written in June 2000]
